Eid al-Adha: Why could a loving God ask for the slaughter of an innocent child?

Assalamu'alaikum wr.wb.,

The following are some questions related to the event of Eid al-Adha that have been asked not only by non-Muslims but also by Muslims who might be embarrassed to ask, worrying about being labeled as heretics or have weak faith just because of asking such question. But I believe these questions are related to our fundamental belief as Muslims and need to be addressed especially during the khutbah of Eid al-Adha.

Why could a loving and merciful God ask one of His chosen prophet to slaughter his own son? Isn't that barbaric and sadistic? Has not God himself forbidden the killing of innocent? What sin did the son do that he deserve to be sacrificed? Is it possible that this command based on a dream from Satan who always commands evil things, not from God who never commands anything evil? If it was only a test, why God needed to test Ibrahim with such evil command? Is God already All-Knowing, All-Knowledgeable, who understand the levels of faith of his prophets?

This short article is an attempt to address this question based on the Qur'anic verses related to the event. Any correction or additional insight to this is more than welcome. I hope this short article will be useful for those who need it.

Background Story

There is no a single verse in the Qur'an that states God commanded Ibrahim AS ('alayhis salam – may peace be upon him) to really sacrifice his own son. If we read the verses related to this event (Qur'an 37:102-111), the chronology of the story starts from a specific dream that Ibrahim had. In this dream, he saw himself sacrificing his beloved son (most Muslim scholars say it's Isma'il, which is also my view, but some say it's Ishaq, as in Judeo-Christian tradition, but this is another topic to discuss). Ibrahim loved his son so much since he waited to have a son for a long time until he reached an old age. When his son grew up young and his love for his son grew stronger, he had this dream. Ibrahim then consulted his son about the dream, and his son surprisingly told him to do what he was told no matter absurd this command might seem. Both Ibrahim and his son, knowing well that Ibrahim is God's prophet, believed that his dream was a message from God who knows what best for them. They finally humbly decided to submit themselves to God’s command and went to the mountain to perform the sacrifice.

However, when Ibrahim laid down his son on the altar, God stopped Ibrahim from what he was about to commit. God placed a ram in his son's place to be sacrificed (Qur'an 37:103-107). God explained that it was a great test for Ibrahim (Qur'an 37:106). God could have informed this to Ibrahim earlier but then it would not be considered a test if Ibrahim knew it beforehand. The fact that God stopped Ibrahim from sacrificing his own son shows that God is not a bloodthirsty being who requires the slaughter of son of His beloved prophet to satisfy His own ego as often accused by ignorant people.

Why Test?

But then, why did God need to test Ibrahim? Isn't He the All-Knowing God who knows already the level of faith of everyone especially His own prophets? God knows, but human does not. To make this known to all, there must be an event which could be perceived by them. God already knew that Ibrahim had faith in him, but it was necessary for Ibrahim to prove it through action. God through this event demonstrated that Ibrahim, as His chosen prophet, trusted God completely and placed him above all else, even his own son.

Similar event happened earlier in Ibrahim’s life time, when he received God's message to leave his wife (Hajar) and his son (Isma'il) in the middle of a desert. One might ask the same question, how could the Loving and Merciful God told His prophet to do something like that. But Ibrahim trusted and relied upon God wholeheartedly, and God protected him and his family as He promised. We know now this historical event stirred a series of future events and finally turned this desert to be a major city in the world visited by millions throughout history until now.

We learned from these events that it's not impossible for a human being, who has been given mind and heart, to accept God's decision, though his mind and his heart do not fully comprehend the real wisdom behind it, and to rely upon God since He comprehends all things in His mercy and knowledge (Qur'an 40:7).

Satanic dream?

Some people say that the dream that Ibrahim had was from Satan since God will never ask someone to do evil thing, and only Satan command evil action. Is this true?

God says in the Qur’an that He commands justice and kindness, and forbids evil and shameful things (7:28, 16:90). In the story of Ibrahim above, this was shown when God stopped Ibrahim from fulfilling the vision he saw in his dream, sacrificing his own son, which was only a test for him. The Qur'an mentions that Ibrahim believed without doubt that it was a message from God. He knew that dream was a medium for God's message to His prophets, and he believed fully that God will not harm him and his family. God says in Quran 37:105 that Ibrahim was commended for showing his obedience which is considered as an admirable conduct of a believing servant. If this vision is from Satan, God will certainly protect and inform him as God says in Qur’an 22:52-53 that He will protect His prophets from Satan's cunning deceptions and temptations. So this argument clearly refute the opinion that says Ibrahim's dream was in fact from Satan.

That was Ibrahim, the chosen prophet of God. How about the common people who are not God’s prophets? In our time now, no one can claim himself as God's prophet since no more new prophet comes after the Prophet Muhammad SAW  (salallahu ‘alayhi wasalam – may God’s blessing and peace be upon him). This is clearly taught by our Prophet SAW in many authentic ahadith. No one can now claim that his dream is a wahy or revelation from God, even if it does not contradict the teaching of our religion. A dream might be an ilham/inspiration or good sign from God, if it contains good message, or it might be from Satan if it contains otherwise and we should God's refuge from it, or it might come as result of our feeling/psychological. This is also addressed by the Prophet SAW in his authentic hadith.

Friend of God

The Eid al-Adha event shows us that Ibrahim deserved the title "Khalilullah", a friend of God, for having a great trust and reliance upon Him since the beginning of his quest for God. After this great test, anyone would not dare to make a derisive comment about Ibrahim, such as "Oh yes, Ibrahim was always willing to sacrifice his own life for the sake of God, but he would not be able to sacrifice his own family especially his only son. He would not choose God over his own son."

It is then not exaggerated if God states in the Qur'an:
And We left (this blessing) for him among generations in later times: "Peace and salutation to Ibrahim!" (37:108-109)

Beautiful Qur'an recitation 3:133-136 - by Qari' Muammar Z.A.

"Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for
Paradise whose width is that of the heavens and of the earth,
prepared for the righteous.

Those who spend (in charity), whether in prosperity, or in
adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon men; for God loves
those who do good.

And those who, when they do an evil thing or wrong themselves,
remember God and implore forgiveness for their sins - Who
forgiveth sins but God? - and will not knowingly repeat (the
wrong) they did.

For such the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and
Paradise with rivers flowing underneath,- an eternal dwelling:
How excellent a recompense for those who work (and strive)!"

Dishonesty shown in manipulating translation and context of a hadith by an Anti-Islam

I saw this video on youtube. An Arabic speaking guy was manipulating the translation of the Arabic words found in a hadith and its right context. Many non-Muslims have been tricked by him in believing that Islam is a violence religion that demands everyone to convert or die.

My responses on this video:

First, the word "Zakah" was translated to "money" while it's not. Zakah is the alms/charity given to poor people in the community. It is one of the pillar of Islam next to "Salah" (prayer), "Siyam" (fasting), and "Hajj" (pilgrimage). Zakah itself comes from a word that means "to purify", not even related to "money".

Second, he translated "al-Naas" in this hadith to"all people, everybody" to confuse the non-Arabic speaking about the context of the hadith. As an Arab, he should know the prefix "al-" in front of a word in Arabic is similar with the definite article "the" in English. If he read many scholars' commentaries of this hadith, it's clear that the word here means "the Arab pagans who fought the Muslims at that time", not all people or everybody.

Third, he translated "sala" in the phrase "salallahu 'alaihi wa salam" to "pray" in order to show that "Allah/God prays to the Prophet". This is dishonesty. Everyone knows the word "sala" does not always mean praying or worshipping. If you open Arabic dictionary (Arabic to Arabic), you can find it has several meaning, one of which is "give blessing". In this case, the phrase "may Allah/God give him/the Prophet blessing". Please be honest in the translation as well as the context.

Fourth, he claimed that the Qur'anic verses of peace and tolerance (e.g. 109:6, 2:256, 60:8) have been abrogated by the verses of war. They should know any claim of abrogation is not acceptable unless it is backed by an authentic hadith. Opinion of anyone (be he is a scholar, mullah, etc) beside the Prophet cannot be accepted in this case as well as other legal cases in Islam. Hence the verses of peace and tolerance are still valid, in effect and not abrogated as they claim.

Fifth, he claimed the verses of peace and tolerance were revealed in the period when the Prophet was weak and didn't have anyone to fight for him. Again, this is false accusation. Verses 2:256, 60:8, were revealed in Madinah when Muslims had the upper hand against the pagan Arabs who fought them.

Sixth, he slandered the Prophet that he killed his Jew neighbors when he was strong in Madinah. This is a total lie and slander. If he talked about the war against Banu Quraiza, he should not hide the fact that the Prophet and Muslims waged war against them because of their breaking of treaty and stabbed the Muslims from the back during the siege by the confederation army of pagan Arabs who surrounded the Madinah at that time. Reliable historical records told us that inspite of the victories and achievements of the Prophet, at the time of his death he was in debt, and his shield was in the hands of a Jewish citizen of Madinah who still resided in the city as a collateral for his debt. This proves that the accusation is baseless.

I don't know exactly the intention of anti-Islam and Islamophobes in making their case against Islam. If they want to show the problems with extremists interpretation of Islam, why not explain these problems in an honest way one by one so everyone can understand them clearly? The way to point that out should be in a civilized manner, with a good argumentation, without lies, insults and slanders. Even a valid argument can't convince anyone if presented in a disrespectful and degrading manner.

The Despised and Neglected (part 2)

One day, early in the morning, Haji Ibrahim came to meet Sheikh Mabruk and gave him a job to open the gate of his family graves. This time was for his fifth son. Every year, Haji Ibrahim mourned because every time he was blessed with a son, his son lived not long enough. Shaikh Mabruk was so touched by this tragic life of Haji Ibrahim. He could feel the sorrow in the heart of the poor father who had such a trial.

"This is my fifth son. My only daughter who is still alive suffers from paralysis since few months ago. Only with the help of wheel chair can she move. The doctor who is taking care of her told me that there is no more hope for my little girl. There is no medicine found yet to cure her disease. Maybe you will dig another grave for my only daughter, Shaikh Mabruk. O God, my only daughter will return to You soon. Your Mercy, O Lord!"

That poor father put his head on Sheikh Mabruk's chest. He cried like a litttle child who lost her parents in the same time. The heart of Sheikh Mabruk was ripped. Depressed. With tears flowing from his eyes, Haji Ibrahim said:

"I beg you, Shaikh Mabruk, please pray for my daughter, for her health. I hope with the help of your prayer, God will heal her. Please!"

Sheikh Mabruk answered Haji Ibrahim: "Actually you are the best person to pray for her. You have performed pilgrimage to the Holy Land. You have visited the Prophet's grave. What about me? I only visited one jail to another jail. My obedience to God? Every one knows what kind of person I am. How can I lift my face up and pray to Him for another person?"

But Haji Ibrahim repeated his request with tears and sob. "My voice is almost gone in prayer. I pray and fast many times but heaven does not accept my prayer still. I beg you O Sheikh Mabruk, please pray for my only daughter. God knows what is in everyone's heart. By God, please pray for my daughter. Please don't reject this poor father's request!" Haji Ibrahim sobbed. Sheikh Mabruk's heart was shattered.

All of a sudden, Sheikh Mabruk raised both of his hands to the sky, although his face showed the face of a man who was ashamed and afraid to look up to heaven. With humbleness and tears flowing from his eyes, Sheikh Mabruk prayed:

"O God, please heal her, because there is none can heal except You. O Lord, please give her health because there is none who can give health except You."

After Mabruk finished his prayer, both men cried and hugged each other. That was an experience they had never felt before. Then they said farewell to each other.

* * *

The next day, Haji Ibrahim came to the cemetary to find Sheikh Mabruk. He looked for him in every side of the cemetary, but he couldn't find him. Haji Ibrahim tried to ask everyone he met, "Where is Sheikh Mabruk? Show me where he is! My daughter has been cured from her disease! She now can stand up and walk without her wheel chair. The doctor said that it was a miracle. I am looking for Sheikh Mabruk, where is he? Please tell me where he is!"

Haji Ibrahim and everyone else didn't know. Early that morning, Sheikh Mabruk had returned to his God. He passed away just after he said his prayer for forgiveness which he always did before he went to sleep. Mabruk always prayed:

"O my God, please forgive me. There is no one can forgive my sins except You. O my God, no matter how many and how big my sins and mistakes are, none can bring harm to you. No matter how many and how big my good deeds are, none can bring benefit for you. You are the Greatest in all worlds. O my God, no matter how big my sins are, Your forgiveness is greater. No matter how many my mistakes are, Your mercy are abundant, more than everything else.

Glory be to You O my God. Your mercy and knowledge are vast. Please have mercy on my soul because of my weakness for man was created weak.  O my God, please accept me and place me together with those who are humble and afraid of You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. Glory be to you, I have nothing and cannot help myself even a little bit.

O my Lord, I surrender my self to You. I surrender my weaknesses. I surrender my life to You. There is no power and ability but from You. Because of You, I am alive, and because of You, I die. Because of You, I will be raised from death, and because of You, I will receive forgiveness. And because of You, I will enter Your Paradise..."

Sheikh Mabruk's breath one by one soared to the sky to welcome the dawn and call of dawn prayer. He gave his life back to his Creator.

That is the end of the life of a man who always committed sin and did mistakes, but always tried hard to repent and tried hard to be close to God. He is better than those who always feel obedience but too arrogant and full of pride with their obedience.

Someone is forgiven by God because he knows to place himself in front of Him. Eventhough he was despised and neglected by the society. Eventhough he had to try hard to be able to get out from narrow doors and narrow alleys in his life...

The Despised and Neglected (part 1)

After he gulped down that cheap wine, that man cried. He cried, wiped his tears and let out a sob. He cried because he regreted his act. His lips trembled asking God's forgiveness. "I repent, my God, I repent. I promise I will not repeat it again. I ask Your forgiveness." But, just a second after he ended his request, he swallowed another gulp of wine. Then he cried as before asking God's forgiveness.

"This is the last one, O my God. Please forgive me. I repent. I promise that I will walk on Your path."

His weakness was so strong in controlling himself. Every time he was aware of his mistake, his weakness made him did the same mistake. This happened to an old man, Shaikh Mabruk, who never gave up repenting but was always defeated by his weakness.

"Sheikh", that what people called him to ridicule his behavior. He was 60 years old, but his physical condition showed an age of more than 100 years old. Old and aged. He was found in a street when he was still a baby wrapped in a piece of cloth. The orphanage was the place where he was raised. Then he moved to the juvenile institution later in his childhood. He had done most kind of crimes . Jail was not a strange place for him that he went in and out of it so often.

That was the life of Sheikh Mabruk who ended as a keeper of a cemetary. He ate, drank, and slept with all the dead bodies in the graves. During the day, he was a good and nice old man. But, when the night arrived, he became a cadavers' seller to those medical students who needed them. He sold them with a just enough price to buy a cheap wine to forget his nightmare and miserable life.

Mabruk was a criminal who was different from others. He was a criminal who deserved a pity from us. He always cried for his sins and mistakes that he felt he could not avoid. He was ashamed of himself. His face always looked humble and sad. He felt his heart told him that a person like him does not deserve the warm of the sun, the fresh of the air, and all the good and lawful food. He felt no desire to commit a sin if there wasn't an urge to do it. He tried to pull himself out of his bad habits. He tried so hard to defeat his dark side, but he was usually the one who was always defeated.

Then, Mabruk cried again and sobbed as a despised and neglected person in the society. He tried to forget all bad things that happened in his life with each drop in each bottle of wine. The more he drank, the more he felt he was despised by everyone. Mabruk always felt that God always set His sights on him. He didn't know where this feeling came from. He despised himself. It's like a croach that fells into a bottle of glue. The more it tries to loose itself from it, the more it is drowned in it.

But Mabruk convinced that losing hope could not save him from his problem. That's why Mabruk felt that no matter how big and how many his mistakes and sins are, God's forgiveness will always be abundant. God doesn't need our good deeds and doesn't lose anything for our misconduct. He is The King of all worlds. He is the Greatest having abundant of mercy. God always gives and never asks help from anybody. All need Him. All are poor in front of Him. This feeling made Mabruk never stop crying and never stop to wait the door. Almost everyone knew his life. Some ridiculed him, but many felt pity for his fate.

There were a few people who came to Mabruk to ask him to pray for them. He answered their request with tears, "Shaikh Mabruk prays for you?! Oh, don't you know that I am not a 'Sheikh' and not a 'Mabruk' the blessed" Then he cried and sobbed again. His hand trembling pulled out a bottle of wine from his pocket and drank it. With tears flowing from his eyes, he ran into the dark alley in the cemetery, and asked God's forgiveness.

Spider-man 3

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama
I put this movie review in "Drama" category because like its prequel (Spider-man 2) this movie touches our emotion with its story more than the actions and visual effects.

In Spider-man 2, Peter Parker has to face many difficult situations and unfortunate conditions for being a normal human being (as a nephew, a friend, a student, and an employee), and at the same time for being a man with a great power and a choice to use it for good causes with the risk of putting the lives of his beloved ones in danger. Also in the prequel, we see how Peter struggles to survive his daily life by working as a pizza delivery guy and a freelance photographer, with no enough money to pay the rent, at the same time juggling between school works, friends, and the Spider-man job to fight crimes in the city.

In Spiderman-3, Peter has to face a greater challenge of being overcome by his own pride and wrath: the pride of being a superhero whom all people in the city love and praise, and the wrath to revenge his uncle's death. These two uncontrolled feelings trigger a series of events that tears apart his relationship with the girl whom he loves and plans to marry. The situation becomes more increasingly complex with the old tension between him and his best friend, Harry - the new Goblin, and the confrontation between him and the killer of his uncle - Flynt Marko the Sandman, and the existence of a symbiote, a living alien organism from outer space, that is attached and bonded to his Spider-man suit, boosting his arrogance and anger, as well as the conflict between him and Eddie Brock who later becomes the Venom.

The visual effect is good, especially the crane accident part. The fighting scenes are also good but not as good as its two prequels shown with more slow motion styled fighting movements.

It seems the director (Sam Raimi) intentionally shoves a lot of stories into this 2 hours-30 minutes movie, making this movie contain too much to digest. In this case, too much means less information in such a short of viewing time. I think they should have cut the Venom part and put it into another sequel (Spider-man 4) since it has enough stories in itself to be made as a separate movie.

Some scenes seem to move slowly to focus on the drama but others move fast to cover all story. I think this is done at the expense of some parts which might have been cut or deleted to fit into the given time length. For example, there is no scene that tells us how Peter starts to realize the existence of the symbiote and brings a sample to his Professor's lab. Some player roles are also not shown in enough time to make the story flows better, like the role of Gwen Stacy and her father as the Police chief.

As its two prequels, I like this movie more than other movies with different superheroes, because it treats a superhero as a normal human being who has emotions, feelings and real life with family and friends. The story is easy to follow, the pictures are so clear and easy to enjoy (compare this with "Batman Begins"). It seems there is no bad guy in this movie. All the bad guys here are shown as normal people who are caught in difficult situations and predicaments. You could feel the sensation of emotions during some scenes, especially the part at the end of the movie when a best friend who had become a sworn enemy......[cut]... (you better watch it yourself to find out! :-))

Lessons learned:

* Always control your feelings - especially pride and wrath.
* Revenge can be like poison that might take you over and turn you into something ugly.

The Illusionist & The Prestige

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Mystery & Suspense
These two movies were released within a month from each other. They are basically telling two different stories yet around the same theme: a world of tricks and intrigues of love and power of being a magician.

The Illusionist, played by Edward Norton, tells a story about a famous magician confronted by a difficult challenge of winning an aristocrat girl, whom he loved from the past, from an ambitious Crown Prince who was engaged to her. The magician was forced to stage a very daring plan to save her from the ruthless Prince. A witty police inspector who was close to the Prince but sympathetic to the magician investigated the whole situation and adds to the suspense of this movie.

The Prestige, played by Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, tells a story about a friendship that becomes a rivalry between between two magicians, who are willing to do everything to compete and win the heart of their audience. The title of this movie is based on the last act of a magic trick, "the prestige", in which after showing something ordinary ("the pledge") and turning it into something extraordinary ("the turn"), the magician shocks the audience with a twist and make them not believe in what they see.

I feel The Illusionist has more suspense compared to The Prestige, although the audience most probably could easily guess the end of its story, but not so with The Prestige. I also feel The Prestige's scenes sequence, in which the past and the present are shown in reference to the reading of a diary, might cause some audience to do some thinking to piece story bits together. The end part was elegantly composed. I found out that its director is the same one who directed "Memento". No wonder. :-)

Quotes:

"Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it because you're not really looking.
You don't really want to know the secret. You want to be fooled."

"The audience knows the truth: the world is simple. It's miserable, solid all the way through.
But if you could fool them, even for a second, then you can make them wonder,
and then you got to see something really special...it was the look on their faces."
